“To all this she must yet add something more substantial…”

Since I finished up the final book in the Paige series at the beginning of May, I’ve been spending the last few weeks doing something I rarely get the chance to do.

Reading!

(By the way, 15 bonus points to whoever can finish the quote in the title of this post and name the person who said it!)

When I was growing up, I would get completely lost in books. I would sometimes forget to eat I would be so busy reading. It’s quite a bit harder now with a busy two year-old around and for some reason, both boys I live with like to eat. 😉

Since Jon has been busy every night with homework for his Master’s class this summer, I’ve had lots of time to read this month! So I raided my mom’s bookshelf and finally started reading some of the free books I’d been piling up from Amazon Kindle. 😉

Here’s what I’ve been reading so far this summer:

Jesus Calling (by Sarah Young) – I love, love, love, LOVE this devotional! It’s written by a woman who kept a prayer journal for a year except instead of recording her prayers to God (like I think most of us do!), she took the verses she was reading and turned them into notes from the Lord. At the end of every day’s reading, she includes a list of verses that led to that day’s thoughts. My new favorite place to read this is in the morning on my back patio with a hot cup of coffee. 🙂

Fools Rush In (by Janice Thompson) – This novel is so funny! Love the story of an Italian family living in Galveston, Texas trying to run both a pizza parlor and a wedding consultant company. The story is told through daughter Bella’s eyes and it’s a very quick, fun read!

A Hope Undaunted (by Julie Lessman) – I don’t read very much historical fiction, but this novel was free on Kindle a few weeks ago and I snatched it up then. 😉 It’s about a large family and set just before the Great Depression.

Evidence of Mercy (by Terri Blackstock) – I read this book about ten or more years ago and loved it and just reread it this week and could barely put it down again.

Next up for me – Perfecting Kate by Tamara Leigh!

What have you been reading??

  1. "in the improvement of her mind by extensive reading.” – Mr. Darcy! : ) I've been reading Jesus Calling too and have been enjoying it. Perfecting Kate is a good book, I think you'll like it. Thanks for all of the book suggestions, I'm always looking for more good books to read. : )

  2. This summer I have reread every single book of yours! I just finished reading Paige Torn, it took me less than a day to finish, and lets just say it was amazing, I absolutely loved it! The next book I plan on reading is pride and prejudice or sense and sensibility for a second time. I can never get to much Jane Austin! Thanks for the book suggestion 🙂

  3. i've read almost all of diann mills books. i'm a sucker for a mystery especially an fbi book!

now i'm getting into hallie ephron, she isn't christian but the books i've read so far have been clean and very interesting!

  4. What have I been reading? Well yesterday and today, despite having huge stuff at work I managed to squeeze in a book that was on sale on Kindle… .99 cents for Miss Match, quite the bargain I must say! I loved it! Except for the matchmaking, it was just about word-for-word (or action-for-action) how this week has been for me. So much fun! When does the next book go on sale??? 😉

  5. If you loved the first book in Wedding by Bella series make sure you read all of Janice Thompson's books who also writes by the name Janice Hanna. I love her books! Another great author is Sandra.D.Bricker! I'm currently reading If the Shoe Fits by Sandra D.Bricker.

  6. I have just found Jenny B. Jones and I love her, too! She has a sense of humor much like someone else I know 😉 I just finished her titles "Save the Date" and "There You'll Fine Me". Both are very good. I also recently read the "Sal's Place" series by Marianne Evans. All very good authors. I, too, just started beginning my day with a Shakeology chocolate shake and Jesus Calling 🙂 –Linda L.

  7. I've been reading Jesus Calling recently, too! LOVE IT. How did I not know about this devotional before?!

And I loved Fools Rush In… such a cute story. 🙂

Right now I am reading Becky Wade's new Undeniably Yours. I really liked her first novel, I just started this one.

Have you ready any books by Kristen Heitzmann?? Really good, especially the Spencer Family series. 🙂

I've read all your other books, Paige Torn is on my B&N list to read!! 🙂

  8. Just finished Victim of Grace by Robin Jones Gunn, and Paige Torn loved it. It is my favorite so far, I think that it is because I found myself relating to Paige more than the other characters.

I am getting read The Girl's still got it by Liz Curtis Higgs for my devotional reading. For fun reading I am getting ready to read Sisterchicks on the Loose by Robin Jones Gunn.

  9. I'm currently reading Sand Castle Bay by Sherryl Woods, First Date by Krista McGee, The Accidental Bride by Denise Hunter, and from Notting Hill with Love…Actually by Ali McNamara. Checkout my teaser from the last one at randomamb.blogspot.com!

  10. The Sierra Jenson series by Robin Jones Gunn. I'm a little past it age-wise, but it's the sister series to the Christy Miller series and, I always say, every girl on the planet should read Christy Miller. There must be something to be said about a spin of it.

  11. Oooh I'm loving all these summer reading ideas I'm getting from your post and the comments!! 🙂

So far this summer I have read Paige Torn and Sketchy Behavior and really enjoyed them both!! I am so looking forward to Paige Rewritten!!!

I also just finished Secretly Smitten by Colleen Coble, Kristin Billerbeck, Diann Hunt & Denise Hunter. I really enjoyed it! A fun, sweet read 🙂

    -Madison 🙂

  12. This has been a great season of reading so far: I've read Secrets Over Sweet Tea by Denise Hildreth Jones (I LOVE HER), Barefoot Summer by Denise Hunter, and I've just finished books 1 and 2 of the 86 Bloomberg Place books by Melody Carlson (2 more in that series). All of these have been excellent!

    1. I recently purchased Secrets Over Sweet Tea and Barefoot Summer, but I haven't gotten to read them yet. I love every one of Melody Carlson's books! Have you read the On the Runway series?

  13. I loved the other two in the "Weddings by Bella" series by Janice. The story continues just as you want it to! I'm sure you will enjoy Perfecting Kate too. Its really great. I just re-read my favorite Kristen Billerbeck series (Ashley Stockingsdale). I need to pick up Evidence of Mercy. I have always heard it was good but it never actually made it off the must read list and into my hands.

  14. One of my favorite reads this past year was "wish you were here" by Beth K. Vogt. She has another one coming out that I can hardly wair for. 🙂

  15. I am catching up on your blog and I just finished watching the long version of Pride and Prejudice for probably the 200th time and the sad thing is I am not exaggerating. My sisters had me watching this movie all the time when I was little. When my parents left town one time, I probably watched it seven times. Thanks to that I can quote a good majority of the movie. It just never gets old!!! Anyways long story short I literally have a mug that has that quote on it. Best book and movie!!!
